Hints for Show Exhibitors

  • Read the Schedule carefully to comply with the requirements of the Class. Pay attention to the number and size required to be staged. Allow plently of time for staging and ask a Committee Member if anything is unclear.
  • Arrange exhibits as attractively as possible. The Judges award points for quality, condition, size, uniformity, colour etc. The RHS Show Handbook provides details and a copy of classification for the Narcissi, Chrysanthemum and Dahhlia Classes, is held by the Society.
  • Unless otherwise stated, exhibits of fruit, flowers and vegetables shall be one cultivar of one kind.
  • Flowers - All flowers should be exhibited as cut and artificial aids are prohibited. When the number of blooms is specified (e.g. 6 Roses) buds should be removed, leaving a single bloom to each stem. Give preference to blooms which are fresh and in full colour, have flowers of uniform size and not too fully opened. Chrysanthemum and Dahlia blooms should be broad, deep, and full in centre.
  • Fruit and vegetables  - Where appropriate, these should be shown on the stalk and with leaves. Carefully remove soil fron amy roots, including from potatoes, carrots etc. Do not skin onions beyond the outer damaged skin. Do not polish fruit and avoid damage to bloom. Florets should be bright in colour and fresh to tips. for any other fruit or vegetable classes, the number to be shownis listed in the show pages and on page 7 of the current Schedule.
  • Domestic - All exhibits must be home made.  Sewn and knitted articles should be equally perfect on both right and wrong sides. Never knot wool: either joinat the end of a row or graft in. Embroidery should be presented witha detachable backing, if appropriate.
  • Jams and Jellies should be in well filled clear glass jars with a wax disc and cellophane cover. Pickles, chutneys, etc., should be in plain jars, well filled and with a screw top.
  • Given recipes in the Schedule must be followed exactly as written for that Class entry. Flan glazes should be uniform and total. Do not bake in foil cases or dredge sugar onto sponges to hide overcooking.
  • Photographic - All photographs must have been takenby the exhibitor. Please read the titiles carefully, e.g. whether singular or plural.
  • Floral Art - exhibits can be arranged at the Village Hall or at home. Plant materials may be from any source. The Society background is of a beige coloured material.
